PML-N candidate wins Islamabad’s mayorship
ISLAMABAD: Pir Adil Shah Gillani, a candidate backed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, won the election for mayorship of the country’s capital, Islamabad. The candidate was announced winner on Monday.
PML-N’s Gillani bagged 43 votes against PTI’s Malik Sajid Mehmood who got 26 votes. The victory has proved an important breakthrough for PML-N since the party is currently engaged in a mass movement (Pakistan Democratic Movement-PDM) against the government.
PML-N Vice President, Maryam Nawaz Sharif has also reacted to the party’s victory. She has claimed that after the flopped show of ‘Tabdeeli drama‘, people have recognised their well-wishers.
The election for the mayorship was announced after the resignation of the former mayor Sheikh Anser Aziz- also from PML-N. The election was held in the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) building where, out of the total 73 members, 69 casted their votes while four members remained absent.
The newly elected mayor is the custodian of the shrine of Pir Imam Ali Gillani located in Rata Hotar near Islamabad’s famous Bari Imam Shrine.
