ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday said the government was working on ski resort feasibility to promote winter tourism in the country.
“Deosai, the high altitude plateau in Gilgit-Baltistan, has turned out to be the country’s first ever winter ski traverse,” he said in a tweet.
The prime minister shared a number of pictures of the local and foreigner skiers traversing in the snows of Deosai.
Recently, a ski traverse event was held by the Tourism Department of Gilgit-Baltistan at Deosai National Park to encourage tourism in the area.
Deosai is the combination of two words: Deo means giant and Sai means shadow. People believed that giants used to live here, therefore the name ‘The Land of the Giants’ took place. The weather in the region is unpredictable as sometimes it starts snowing in summer too.
In December last year, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority (KP-CTA) in collaboration with the experts of famed Discovery, National Geographic and Oxygen channels had arranged a training camp for the youth to learn skills to cope with harsh weather conditions, difficult situation and disasters in the hilly and forest areas.
Keeping in view the aspiration and spirit of the youth for the thrilling activities, the KP-CTA took the initiative to promote adventure tourism and attract the youth towards healthy activities in the province.
