CHILAS: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday said Diamer-Bhasha dam will provide cheap and environment-friendly hydel power to the national grid.
PM Imran Khan said this while inaugurating construction work at Diamer-Bhasha Dam mega project in Chilas. “It is a natural site for dam. Cheap and environment friendly hydel power will be obtained through the dam,” he said.
He said 4,500 megawatts electricity will be generated through the dam. He said excess of imports boosted inflation, which eventually affected poor and increased impoverishment.
The prime minister said the previous government depended on imported fuel rather than generating power from rivers. We inflicted oppression on our people by not building big dams, he said adding that generation of electricity through furnace oil and coal increased temperature.
PM Imran admitted that youth needed jobs as a large number of people had lost employments following outbreak of coronavirus. Steps would be taken by NCOC to open tourism sector, he said adding that the Gilgit-Baltistan chief minister could open tourism with standard operating procedures.
“We will make every effort to increase budget of GB. We have decided to construct more dams in the country,” he said.
In a tweet, Chairman CPEC Authority Lt General (retired) Asim Saleem Bajwa earlier said the dam, a water reservoir of 6.4 million acre feet, will add 1.2 million acres feet water for agriculture.
He said the mega project will generate 4500 megawatts of cheaper and greener hydel power.
Asim Saleem Bajwa said the project will also create 16000 jobs besides giving a boost to power, steel, cement and construction industries.
