PM Imran announces to establish code of conduct to restore student unions

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has announced to establish a code of conduct to restore student unions.

In a thread of Tweets, PM Imran said students unions played an integral part in grooming of future leaders in universities. However, he said, students unions in Pakistan had become violent, hence destroyed the intellectual atmosphere on the campuses.

“Universities groom future leaders of the country and student unions form an integral part of this grooming. Unfortunately, in Pakistan universities’ student unions became violent battlegrounds & completely destroyed the intellectual atmosphere on campuses.

“We will establish a comprehensive & enforceable code of conduct, learning from the best practices in internationally renowned universities, so that we can restore & enable student unions to play their part in positively grooming our youth as future leaders of the country,” he tweeted.

We will establish a comprehensive & enforceable code of conduct, learning from the best practices in internationally renowned universities, so that we can restore & enable student unions to play their part in positively grooming our youth as future leaders of the country.

Students across the country took to the streets on November 29 as part of the Students Solidarity March to demand for rights of political expression.

The march was held in several cities of the country with students calling for the ban on students unions to be lifted, inclusion in policy making, constitutionalisation of sexual harassment committees and an end to privatization of educational institutes.

Moreover, the students had called for the demilitarization of campuses, increased allocation of GDP for education, an end to discrimination and harassment based on languages, ethnicity, gender and religion.
