The Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) has found out that 22 brands of bottled water provides unsafe water which could be harmful for human consumption.
The PCRWR has issued a report which states that 22 brands of bottled water out 180, have been found to be a threat to human health.
16 of them were found to be chemically unsafe. Whereas, 6 were identified as micro-biologically unsafe.
The unsafe brands of bottled water were found being sold in the city, the chemically and micro-biologically unsafe water contains TDS which may cause cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis and typhoid.
However, the threat to human health brands of bottled water includes Pure, Blue Plus, Sunlay, Aqua King, Spring Fresh Life, UF Pure Edge, Douro, Dropice, Puricana Mineral, Drops, Best Natural, Al Barkah Water and Koyo.
The water standard quality for sodium is 50mg/L and the brands termed as unsafe contained higher levels of sodium ranging from 60-165 mg/L.
After the revelation of the unsafe brands, the consumers took their concerns to Pakistan Standards & Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) and questioned how such thing could happen in-spite of double checking.
Earlier in February, the Sindh Food Authority (SFA) sealed two restaurants of the city Karachi due to poor hygiene of food.
According to the SFA deputy director operations south, the SFA imposed a fine of Rs 200,000 on Belle Vita and Rs 400,000 on Cocochan for operating without food business licenses and for the practices that violate SFA rules and SOPs under the Sindh Food Authority Act, 2016.
Moreover, the SFA officials revealed that they have found expired food products, unsafe storing spaces and poor hygiene.
Meanwhile, the restaurants have been given the time period of seven days to make improvements.
