First death anniversary of former prime minister Nawaz Sahrif’s wife Kulsoom Nawaz is being observed today.
Begum Kulsoom Nawaz was born on March 29, 1950 and belonged to a Butt Kashmiri family. She was the grand daughter of legendary wrestler Ghulam Mohammad Baksh known as ‘Gama Pahalwan.‘ Kulsoom did her graduation from Islamia College Lahore and completed MA in Urdu poetry from Punjab University. She also received a Ph.D. degree.
Kulsoom Nawaz had the honor of serving as the first lady of Pakistan thrice, which no other first lady had. On April 2, 1970 Kulsoom married Nawaz Sharif, who was not a politician at that time.
In 1999, when retired Gen. Pervez Musharraf toppled Nawaz Sharif’s government and arrested members of his family before sending them to exile, Kulsoom became the party’s president till 2002.
Kulsoom Nawaz was also elected as MNA from the family seat of the Sharifs in Lahore NA-120 when her husband was disqualified due to Panama Papers case in July, 2017 but unfortunately, Begum Kulsoom was diagnosed with a throat cancer and left for London on August 17.

After some months on ventilator fighting her illness, Kulsoom breathed her last on September 11, 2018.
