Osman Khalid Butt was last seen in the blockbuster drama, Ehd e wafa. He is known for speaking his mind. He never shies away from supporting the cause he believes in. Recently in an interview, he talked about all the deep-rooted issues in our society very candidly.
Osman has always stood up for the rights of women, upon being asked that is it a conscious effort, he reflected that:
“it is not a calculated move. May be that’s how i was brought up and I have seen injustices to the female gender in my childhood which made me more sensitive towards the plight of women specifically”.
He opened up and said he really goes by the quote “Social is political”, which means that the personal problems we go through are actually coming from the socio-political environment around us. And the solutions to those problems are also found in society through social change.
Talking about societal issues in Pakistan he said,
“We are a negative nation, we thrive on people’s wickedness rather then their goodness. It is one of the reasons may be that our industry doesn’t get enough respect. As a craft it is not validated in our society still.”
Showbiz profession is not seen as a ground where you can live on. Osman shared his own experience with his family that asked him two years into his career what is his real job. He talked about the privileges and drawbacks of being a celebrity who speaks up about societal issues.
“People call me Liberal as if it is an abusive word. You are pseudo-liberal, you are a western puppet. If you know such cool terminologies, then look at what philosophy feminism is. You think what women want is to promote vulgarity ?”
Pondering over Pakistani culture he has observed that nobody has ever actually described him what exactly is Pakistani culture. Reminsing about his childhood he said
“I remember doing folk dances. Sindhi, Balochi. I used to take part in all my annual school functions. No one ever said you’re distorting our cultural and moral fabric”.
He acknowledged the fact this intellectualism and thought are present in him because he had a privileged life so, I will use that privilege to raise my voice against issues. But he adds that now lack of knowledge is not an excuse as the whole world is in your hands in the form of mobile. He concluded that it’s people’s conscious decision if they don’t want to enlighten themselves even after having mobile phones.
He talked about his creative arts, Osman has served as a theatre actor, director, film/ Tv actor, writer, scriptwriter, and choreographer. He said that he chooses his role according to his heart and mood. Perhaps he added while playing so many roles the most intense, and important, is the obligation of being the right source of inspiration for the people who follow him.
