‘Omicron’, new Covid-19 variant triggers panic wave
New Covid-19 variant “Omicron” has emerged from the Southern Africa region which has caused a panic among the world.
World Health Organization has named this new variant “Omicron” under Greek letter system. New mutations of Covid-19 have been discovered. The scientific term of this variant is termed as “B.1.1.529”.
It will take a few weeks for the scientists to understand the newly discovered variant’s mutations.
The United States as well as Canada have imposed travel bans from southern Africa countries.
WHO has classified this newly discovered variant as ‘highly transmissible’. Apart from being highly tranmissible, health experts have said that Omicron falls in a similar category as the Delta variant.
A virologist at Warwick University has said, “This new variant of the COVID-19 virus is very worrying. It is the most heavily mutated version of the virus we have seen to date.”
Apart from USA and Canada, European Union has also decided to restrict travel from the infected countries.
Belgium is one of the first EU country which has reported the case of this newly identified variant.
One of the most Covid-19 immunization-vaccinated country, Israel has also reported a case of this mutated variant of Covid-19.
This new variant has sent waves of panic among the economic market as the stock market starts to lose its points.
The same chain was observed in the cryptocurrency market.
Currently, the impact of this variant is still not known yet. It will take a few weeks before the impact of the new variant is fully understood.
It should be noted that almost five million lives have succumbed to Covid-19 since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Pakistan recorded 28,704 lives lost due to the virus.
