New Year’s Eve: pillion riding banned for a week

The Sindh government on Monday announced a ban on motorcycle pillion-riding and the show of weapons in Karachi on New Year’s Eve.
As per a notification, the deputy inspector general of the South Zone police, through a letter, stated that the arrival of the year 2020 would be celebrated with utmost zeal throughout the city from the evening of December 31 till the morning of January 1.
The DIG said a large group of youngsters invade the Clifton beach from different parts of the city in cars and motorcycles creating a ruckus and traffic jam as well as causing inconvenience to the residents of the Sea View area. He has requested imposition of Section 144 of the CrPc for a week that went into effect December 30, 2019, to protect the lives of the citizens and maintain law and order.
Carrying and displaying arms, aerial firing, fire crackers, pillion-riding on motorcycles is prohibited.
The notification says the Sindh Government is adamant in maintaing law and order within the Karachi Division and to avoid any unexpected mishap, it is absolutely necessary to take immediate action. “Now therefore, the Government of Sindh, in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 144 (6) CrPC, do hereby impose a complete ban on the above mentioned acts from 31.”
