A large number of people took to Twitter to protest after reports of Google and Apple’s removing Palestine from their maps surfaced.
Hashtags #WeRejectWorldMap and #FreePalestine took off on Twitter demanding freedom of Palestine and condemning the ‘latest move’ by the American tech giants.
I24News TV has claimed that such protest was launched earlier as well and Google had issued a clarification that Palestine never existed on its map, instead it used West Bank and Gaza’s names to describe the territory of Palestinians.
“There has never been a ‘Palestine’ label on Google Maps, however, we discovered a bug that removed the labels for ‘West Bank’ and ‘Gaza Strip.’ We’re working quickly to bring these labels back to the area,” Google had said in 2016.
Millions of tweets have been posted on the micro-blogging website condemning the tech companies’ not including Palestine on its map despite the territory’s recognition by the United Nations as well.
Posts with maps are being shared on the social media website claiming that Palestine’s label has been removed from the maps.
