NAGAPATTINAM: The incidents of intolerance, bigotry and violence against minorities have gone rampant in India and the Narendra Modi government has failed to put a cap on such happenings.
A gang of 12 armed men beaten and injured a Muslim youth on Thursday night for uploading his pictures of consuming beef soup on Facebook.
A 24-year-old mechanical engineer, Mohamed Faizaan, was beaten with iron and wooden rods for consuming the soup at a restaurant in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. They left the spot after Faizaan collapsed. His friends took him to a nearby hospital for medical assistance. He received injuries on his right wrist, shoulder and back.
Speaking to Indian Express, Faizaan said, “I know the people who attacked me. They were brutal and their intention seemed to have gone beyond a mere assault. It was only the arrival of a police patrol vehicle that saved me.”
Police on Friday arrested four people involved in the attack, identified as N Dinesh Kumar (28), R Agathiyan (28), A Ganesh Kumar (27) and M Mohankumar (28).
The victim said he put the Facebook post after the Hindu Makkal Katchi group had filed a complaint to police in a similar incident.
The secretary of Hindu Makkal Katchi had filed an FIR with police against Mohamed Yunus, which triggered angry response on social media against it.
The extremist group has denied formal affiliation of the attackers with their party saying that they might be supporter of Makkal Katchi but not members of it.
Police are hunting the other suspects.
In another incident of violence, students of Darul Uloom Faiz e Aam madrassa were beaten with cricket bat while they were playing at a playground. They were tortured after they were asked by members of Bajrang Dal, a Hindu militant organization, to chant Jai Shiri Ram and they refused to do so. The incident took place in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh.
Imam of Jamia Masjid Naeem said hand of one boy was fractured, bicycle of another was broken and clothes of almost every student present there were torn and money was snatched from them.
A case has been registered against the perpetrators.
