At least 107 people died in the early stages of the annual monsoon season from lightning strikes in northern and eastern India, officials said.
Bihar’s Department of Disaster Management said district Gopalganj registered a maximum number of 13 deaths. In addition, 22 other districts of the state have confirmed deaths.
Those who died in Gopalganj, when they were struck by lightning, were working in their agricultural fields.
Lightning strikes are very frequent in different parts of India, during heavy monsoon rains. Monsoon runs June through September.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), more than 2,500 people die due to lightning strikes in India every year, said a media source.
