Messi wins 2021 Ballon d’Or for the record seventh time
Lionel Messi and record books are a combination that keeps on improving its chemistry as Messi wins the football best player award (Ballon d’Or) for the record seventh time.
The Argentine player beat Robert Lewandowski and Jorginho who came in second and third place respectively.
An announcement was made in a ceremony held in France.
Messi secured 613 points while Lewandowski grabbed 580 points along with being named “Best Striker”.
Jorginho finished with 460 points to claim the third spot despite winning the Champions League with Chelsea FC and UEFA European Championship with Italy.
Previously, Messi got the best player award in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2019.
No other player has achieved the same number of Ballon d’Or as the Argentine.
“It’s incredible to be here again. Two years ago I thought it was the last time. Winning the Copa America was key,” said jubilant Messi after clinching the football’s most prestigious award.
It should be mentioned that the 2020 edition of the Ballon d’Or was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation.
Robert Lewandowski was named as the “strongest” candidate for the award due to his match-winning performance for Bayern Munich but it was not meant to be as the ceremony could not take place in 2020.
