Mango production in South Punjab declines by 50% this year
MUZAFFARGARH: This summer, the mango production in south Punjab has declined by 50 per cent, mainly due to an unprecedented spring heatwave.
According to Shehzad Zafar, a senior scientist at Mango Research Institute Multan, the districts of Multan, Muzaffargarh, Rahimyar Khan, Khanewal and Vehari have been most affected by the unprecedented spring heatwave.
He said that there are 230,000 acres of mango orchards in South Punjab. Last year, South Punjab produced 1.1 million tons of mango which is expected to be halved this year.
Zafar further said that, the heat has not only affected the mango production but has also affected the mango trees which will not be able to bear full fruits in the coming years.
