Man gives fiancée Dh350,000 for their wedding party, later discovers she’s already married
An Arab woman tricked her fiancee and took Dh350,000 for the wedding preparations. Later the man found that his fiancee is already married and filed a complaint against her.
The woman was found guilty of lying and taking her ex-fiance’s money without authorization by the Al Ain Court of First Instance, which ordered her to return the money to him because it was not used for what it was intended for.
Official court records state that the man’s case seeks that the woman returns the money he paid to her account after their engagement and pay him another Dh20,000 as compensation for his damages.
The man told how he had met the woman over social media and had proposed to her after a year of a relationship. He deposited Dh350,000 into her bank account after the woman accepted his proposal and requested money so she can start planning the wedding.
He claimed he had become suspicious when his fiance put off planning their engagement celebration. He started looking into it at that point and soon discovered that the woman had been lying to him about being single and was actually married to another man.
In court, the woman denied taking the man’s money, claiming that it was a gift. But the three witnesses presented by the man testified that the money was to prepare for their wedding party – which never happened as the woman was already married to another man for over a year and a half. After hearing from all parties, the judge ordered the woman to pay back the man’s money.
