A man who had petitioned the province’s Sindh High Court to ban gutka has died.
Since eating gutka, Naseem Haider had developed cancer and filed the petition to stop others from doing the same thing.
The court ordered the assembly of Sindh to pass a law against gutka based on the petition of Haider.
Gutka, or tobacco chewing, has been prohibited in Sindh since the 2019 Sindh Prohibition of Preparation, Manufacturing, Storage, Sale and Use of Gutka and Mainpuri Act, 2019 was passed on December 19. It was tabled by the Minister for Information, Saeed Ghani.
Consuming gutka will give you six years in prison and Rs500,000 in fine under the law.
In 2019, hundreds of people died from mouth cancer in Sindh.
Eight to 10 people are hospitalized on mouth-related diseases every day at Karachi’s Civil Hospital alone, a doctor had told media sources.
