PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has fixed weight of school bags of different grades through a law ‘The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa school bags (Limitation of Weight) Act 2019’.
The law applies to all the educational institutions across the province with immediate effect.
The law states that it was expedient to fix average weight of school bags for public, private, autonomous and semi-autonomous educational institutions for betterment of students.
Limit on weight of bag of pre-grade 1 students will be 1.5 kg, grade 1 students will be 2.4 kg, grade 2 students will be 2.6 kg, grade 3 students will be 3 kg, grade 4 students will be 4.4 kg, from grade 5 students to grade 9 students will be between 5.3 kg and 6 kg, grade 10 students will be 6.5 kg and of grade 11 and 12 will be 7 kg.
The unprecedented law proposes fine up to Rs0.2 million on the private educational institute which will not abide by it, while a legal action would be taken against the government officials who will violate the law.
According to Section 4(1) of the bill:
Schools are bound to provide lockers and cupboards for students up to 10th grade. This will help give space to students inside centers of learning where they can keep their books and other extra-curricular belongings.
