Karachi’s LG polls to be held on October 23, ECP rules

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has rejected the Sindh Government’s petition to postpone the Local Government (LG) polls in Karachi and announced that, “the LG-polls in seven districts of the metropolis will be held on October 23.”
A meeting was held in Islamabad under the chairmanship of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja in which it was decided that the by-elections of national and provincial constituencies will be held on October 16.
“Except NA-45, national and provincial by-elections will be held on October 16,” ruled ECP.
Regarding local government (LG) elections in Karachi, the ECP said that, “local body elections will be held on October 23 in all seven districts of Karachi Division.”
Earlier, the ECP had announced that polling in the by-elections for 9 seats of the National Assembly and 3 seats of the Punjab Assembly would be held on October 16. However, the Federal Interior Ministry Interior had written a letter to the ECP to postpone the October 16 by-elections and requested to postpone polls for 90 days.
On the other hand, the Sindh government also wrote a letter to the ECP and expressed its inability to hold the local body elections amid devastating floods, but the ECP rejected the request of the Sindh government to postpone the local body elections in Karachi.
