Karachi reports over 500 rape cases in 2022

Over 500 women and girls were subjected to sexual assault in the last 12 months of the outgoing year 2022 in Karachi, according to the data of three major hospitals of metropolis.
The shocking statistics were compiled by the medico-legal officers of three major hospitals in Karachi, including Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Dr. Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH).
The data compiled by the police surgeon officer shows that there has been an extraordinary increase in the cases of rape and murder in Karachi, besides the killing of citizens for resisting robbery has also seen a multifold increase.
Police Surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed said that almost 513 women were sexually assaulted, while 3,649 women were victims of domestic violence who were brought to the hospital for medical examination.
Citing official statistics on rape cases, lawyer and human rights activist Maliha Zia Lari believes that the actual figures may be higher than the reported figures.
Lari further stated that a recent survey conducted by her organization showed that the conviction rate in courts for gender-based violence cases was over 11%. It also showed that only 14pc people in Sindh were ‘satisfied’ with performance of these courts.
“We see that the response is improving but there is a need to focus on prevention,” she said.
