Karachi man sentenced to death for raping 5-year-old girl
An Anti-terrorism court on Friday awarded death sentence to a convict, Amjad Ali, for raping a 5-year-old girl in Shah Latif town area of Karachi in 2017.
The judge of ATC-V held the trial in the judicial complex inside the Central Jail Karachi, where he delivered the reserved verdict after the evidence and the arguments of both parties.
The death sentence awarded by the Anti-Terrorism Court is subject to confirmation by the Sindh High Court as the High Court has the power to confirm the sentence under Section 376 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
The Anti-Terrorism Court directed the office to send the case hearing evidence to the SHC under Section 25-2 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, which is required under Section 374 of the CrPC, for confirmation of the death sentence.
On the other hand, the convict can approach the higher court against the decision of the anti-terrorism court.
During the last few years, many cases of rape had come to light in Karachi.
In April 2018, the police had formed the special team to probe the rape cases of the city.
Later, on December 22, 2020, the model court of Karachi sentenced an accused to death after being found guilty of murdering a 6-year-old girl in 2006.
Muhammad Irshad kidnapped a 6-year-old girl from Gulistan-e-Johar area of Karachi and raped her to death.
