KARACHI: The electricity supplying company of Karachi, K-Electric has issued a clarification blaming the Sui Southern Gas Company for carrying out unannounced loadshedding across the megalopolis.
Residents of the city have to bear the brunt of the power cut for up to 10-12 hours on an average in different areas. People keep tossing in the bed at night and cursing the power company for its failure to meet the demand of the metropolis.
In a video statement, Head of Communications K-Electric Noor Afshan said KE’s production capacity was disturbed because of low gas pressure. “Our three out of four plants are disturbed because of low gas pressure,” she said.

The KE spokesperson said the required gas pressure was necessary for stabilizing the production capacity. She said the production capacity of 250 to 300 megawatt electricity was affected.
She said the company needed “load management” as the supply and demand gap had increased. She said the KE’s management was constantly in contact with the SSGC representatives for resolution of the matter.
A consumer Sibte Siddiqui in response to the statement on social media said that Karachi could not be controlled by KE.
Hadi Abdul Ghaffar asked, “Why do you charge fuel adjustments if production is on gas?” Another consumer responded that the KE should clear all the dues of SSGC so that it could provide uninterrupted fuel supply.
Later, in a statement, KE said, “KE is currently receiving low gas pressure from SSGC, which has created up to 400MW Shortfall. KE’s furnace oil power plants are fully functional, supply gap will only be filled after gas pressure is restored to KE’s Power Plants.”
