Julie arrested for speaking against trans people’s begging
ISLAMABAD: Famous transgender Julie has been arrested by Islamabad police on a complaint lodge by her own community members allegedly for speaking against begging custom of trans-people.
The transgender’s statement has not gone down well with her community. Julie is a trans activist who speaks against different issues faced by her community including rape, violence and abuse.
In 2011, her video of being beaten by some men in Sialkot before rape was gone viral on social media. The perpetrators were arrested later on.
Recently, her statement against begging of transgender triggered fear among his community that this might serve as catalyst for launching crackdown on trans-beggars.
Sources said the FIR was launched by Guru Najma, a resident of Golrah Sharif, who got bail in an attempted murder case filed by Julie’s friend just two days ago.
Julie’s counsel Hassan Niazi said it was a life threatening situation for Julie as she had no support and the only reason she was alive now was because she was a celebrated personality on social media.
