Journalist Protection Bill to be introduced in National Assembly today
ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain has said the Journalist Protection Bill will be introduced in the National Assembly on Monday (today).
In a tweet, he said it was a great success for the working journalists. Fawad also extended his gratitude to Federal Minister for Human Rights Dr Shireen Mazari for her concerted and arduous efforts for formulation of the Bill.
Earlier this month the bill was approved by the federal cabinet.
Under Journalists Protection Act, it will be the responsibility of media organizations to provide safety equipment to the journalists before sending them to the conflict zone
A body will also be formed to address the complaints of the journalists, while a program will be started the following year to support the media.
According to the Protection of Journalists And Media Professionals Act, 2021, journalists have the right to be allowed to carry out their professional work in conflict-affected areas within the country, without threat, intimidation, harassment or fear of persecution or targeting.
Journalists have the right to safeguard the confidentiality of their sources.
