After the House of United States passed the bill aimed to curb the hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders with 364-62 votes, President Joe Biden will sign it to make it a law.
The Covid-19 Hate Crimes Act was passed by the Senate in April with only one vote against it and Biden has announced that he was going to sign it.
The hate crimes against Asian Americans have spiked during the COVID-19 pandemic. So, the law will bind the Justice Department to expedite the hate crimes cases related to coronavirus. It will also provide more resources to the law enforcers to investigate the incidents of harassment against Asian Americans.
A report has revealed that 3,800 hate-related incidents had been reported since spread of the viral disease.
Grace Meng, a Democratic congresswoman, said, “Asian Americans have been screaming out for help, and the House and Senate and President Biden have clearly heard our pleas.”
