Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei named Brigadier Esmail Ghaani as the Quds Force’s new leader, Iran’s news sources announced on Friday.

Ghaani served as the deputy of Soleimani. In a decree, Khamenei described him during the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s as one of the most influential military commanders.

In a U.S. attack at Baghdad’s international airport on Friday morning, Soleimani was killed.

The Pentagon said President Trump ordered his “killing,” following a pro-Iran mob laying siege to the U.S. embassy in Iraq this week.
