LAHORE: Driver of the unfortunate train, which collided with another train this morning leaving 36 dead and dozens others injured, said that he was not sleeping when the accident took place.
Talking to a local news channel, Sir Syed Express Train Driver Ejaz Ahmed said that he saw bogies of the train going towards Karachi derailed at 3:40 am in Daharki. He said he pulled the emergency brakes as soon as he saw the other train, however the train did not stop.
He said his train’s two AC business class bogies and a dining car were affected in the accident, while Millat Express’ three AC business class and eight economy class bogies were fallen on the down track.
The driver said that the investigation would also establish that he and his assistant were not sleeping when the accident happened.
Prime Minister Imran Khan has expressed sorrow over the horrific train accident near Ghotki on Monday morning.
In a statement, PM Imran Khan had asked the Minister for Railways to reach at the site of the accident and ensure medical assistance to injured and support for families of the dead.
He also ordered comprehensive investigation into railway safety fault lines.
The police sources said four boggies of Millat Express were completely destroyed in the accident and the death toll was feared to rise.
