India records 300,000 Covid deaths as pandemic grapples
The number of deaths in India have crossed 300,000 deaths due to the rising spread of covid-19.
According to experts, the death toll might be more than its officially recorded.
India stands at number three after US and Brazil for recording the most deaths caused by covid-19.
Hospitals in India are struggling to cope with the rapid increase of patients and with critical drugs and oxygen running out.
According to Al Jazeera’s Elizabeth Puranam “The official death toll only takes into account people who are dying in hospitals, but most Indians don’t die in hospitals, they die at home. And only around 22 percent of deaths in the country are medically certified.”
4,454 people died due to the virus in the last 24 hours and fresh infections dipped to 2,22,315 on Monday (today).
Moreover, India has stopped vaccination drive for people aged between 18-44 due to lack of vaccines.
People aged 45 and above are also facing difficulty to get their second dose in several regions because of the shortage.
