India: Muslim Prof sent on forced leave after offering ‘namaz’ in college lawn

A college professor in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh was sent on forced leave after a video showing him performing ‘namaz’ in the college lawn went viral and Hindu right-wing youth leaders demanded action against him.

According to Indian media reports, a few days ago, a video surfaced on social media in which Professor SK Khalid of Shri Varshni College in Aligarh was seen praying in a park inside the campus.

As the video went viral on social media, India’s right-wing organizations, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Yuva Morcha, staged protests against the professor and the college.

However, the video was brought to the notice of the college authorities and an investigation committee was formed.

Officials said the panel set up on Sunday was due to present its report this week. According to the college principal, an investigation has been launched which will look into the facts of the case and further action will be taken as per the decision of the panel.

On the other hand, Prof. SK Khalid said that I could not go to the mosque for prayers because I had back pain and I was late for duty so I prayed in the campus park.
