Imran asks world to remain engaged in support of Afghan people

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday urged international community to remain engaged in support of Afghan people, take steps to prevent a humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and stabilize its economy.

He said this while talking to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, on the sidelines of SCO Council of Heads of State, in Dushanbe on Friday.

The Prime Minister underlined that a peaceful and stable Afghanistan is of critical importance for Pakistan and the region. He said in this perspective, Pakistan has assiduously supported the Afghan peace process.

Pakistan and China had maintained close collaboration for the meeting of six neighbouring countries of Afghanistan for a coordinated regional approach.

It was agreed that the two sides would maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges and closely coordinate on all issues of common interest.

During the meeting, China-Pakistan bilateral relations, CPEC and regional situation were also discussed.

The Prime Minister conveyed cordial greetings for President Xi and Premier Li and said that Pakistan and China are ‘iron brothers’ and strategic partners.

Addressing the 20th SCO Summit in Dushanbe on Friday, Prime Minister Imran Khan has urged the SCO member countries to chart out a coordinated approach towards stabilizing the situation in Afghanistan.

He said this should include enhanced engagement to address our common concerns, steps to provide humanitarian support and ensure economic stability and measures to enable Afghanistan to become a reliable partner in peace and prosperity.

The Prime Minister also urged the international community to ensure there is no renewed conflict in Afghanistan and the security situation is stabilized there. This is a moment to stand by the Afghan people firmly and unequivocally. He said there is a rare opportunity to finally end the 40 years of war in Afghanistan and this moment should not be squandered.

Warning against the mischievous propaganda on the part of spoilers, Imran Khan said this will only serve to undermine the prospects for peace.

He said the Taliban must fulfill the pledges especially for an inclusive political structure. He said  it is important to ensure respect for the rights of all Afghans, and that Afghanistan is never again a safe haven for terrorists.
