 IHC issues notices to interior and foreign ministries over Arshad Sharif’s death

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday issued notices to interior and foreign ministries to bring the body of the senior journalist Arshad Sharif back to Pakistan. The court also ordered officials from both ministries to meet the journalist’s family and submit a report by tomorrow.

Chief Justice Islamabad High Court (IHC) Athar Minallah heard the petition filed by Barrister Shoaib Razzaq.

In the petition, it was requested that a commission should be formed to conduct an investigation into the circumstances under which Arshad Sharif fled the country.

He also urged the court to issue orders to bring the body of the journalist back to Pakistan.

During the hearing, Chief Justice Athar Manallah inquired about the body of martyred Arshad Sharif. Barrister Shoaib Razzaq replied that, “Arshad Sharif’s dead body is in Nairobi.”

Later, the Islamabad High Court issued notices to the Interior Secretary and the Foreign Secretary, seeking a report on the incident by tomorrow.

In the notice issued by the court, the designated officer of the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Foreign Affairs was directed to meet Arshad Sharif’s family immediately.

Background:

The family of well-known journalist and senior anchor person Arshad Sharif has confirmed that the journalist has been shot dead in Kenya.

Taking to Twitter Arshad Sharif’s wife Javeria Siddique said, “I lost friend, husband and my favourite journalist Arshad Sharif today, as per police he was shot in Kenya.”

In her tweet, she appealed, “Respect our privacy and in the name of breaking please don’t share our family pics, personal details and his last pictures from hospital.”
