Lack of public transport in Karachi has always been a major problem for the citizens.
The transport system is currently one of the worst in the world.Roads in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, are broken and incomplete. Government’s mass transit projects have been launched but to date no project has been completed.
The famous Muhammad Ali Jinnah Road (Bandar Road) connects the center of the city with the port, but nowadays there is a traffic jam on this highway.
The main reason for the traffic jam is the construction of express lanes for public buses on Bandar Road. The project is still under construction, although it should have been completed three years ago.
With a population of tens of millions, there is no public transport plan. The Green Line of the Rapid Transit Bus project has been under construction since 2016.
The bus project announced by the Sindh Transport Department in June 2019 has not started yet. Under the plan, a private transport company will run 200 buses on 14 routes in Karachi.
President Karachi Transport Ittehad Irshad Bukhari told Hum News that at present there are only 4,000 public buses in the city.Irshad Bukhari said that transporters were closing down due to shortage of CNG, police challan and financial losses.
Incumbent Prime Minister Imran Khan has announced a Rs 162 billion package for mega projects in Quaid-e-Azam, including transport, but city officials say no funds have been released so far this year.
