ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tanneries Association has said that 100,000 camels, 2.2 million cows and 6 million goats and sheep were slaughtered across the country on Eid-ul-Adha this year.
According to the Pakistan Tanneries Association (PTA), total more than nine million animals worth around 2.5 billion dollars were sacrificed.
The PTA said 0.4 million cows and 0.55 million lambs and goats were slaughtered in Lahore only.
On the other hand, leather market sources said that due to inflation, the sacrifices had been reduced by 20% the following year, hence skins worth Rs 1.5 to 2 billion had been lost.
According to the sources, last year 1.3 to 1.4 million hides were collected while this year only 1 million hides were collected. Camel hides were sold for up to Rs550, cow hides for Rs1,200, goat hides for Rs180 and sheep for Rs 110.
