Heavy rains create urban flooding in Karachi

KARACHI: Heavy rains started lashing the megalopolis since the wee hours on Tuesday (today). The met department had forecasted heavy rain, which has created urban flooding in Karachi.
Sindh’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority had issued an alert viewing heavy thunderstorm and warned all the deputy commissioners about urban flooding.
On the other hand, the Sindh government has removed Iftikhar Shalwani from the post of Karachi Commissioner following the rain situation in the city.
Due to rain water accumulation at following areas Nursery to Airport both sides, Jail Road, New Town, New Sabzi Mandi, Hasan Square, Alkaram, Nipa, University Road, Ancle Saria Chowk, Regent Plaza, Avari Tower, Mobile Market, Shafique Mor, Sohrab goth, Ancholi, Savenday, Jama Cloth, Bolten Market, II Chandrigar Road, Zainab Market, traffic is moving slow. People are advised to drive carefully.
Due to rainwater accumulation at Nazimabad Underpass both sides closed for traffic, traffic is diverted on other road.
Korangi Naddi has overflown and the road running parallel to Jam Sadiq Bridge and EBM Causeway are closed. Due to closure of the roads traffic is bumper-to-bumper jam from Brookes Chowrangi to Qayumabad Chowrangi. Gujjar Nullah is choked as usual. Pools, ponds and streams have been created on main arteries. Electricity supply to most of the areas was suspended for up to 12 or more hours. Landsliding is reported in Gulistan e Jauhar.
People are advised to keep distance from electric poles.
The Meteorological Department issued figures of quantity of rain in different parts of Karachi during last 24 hours.
According to the statistics, Gulshan e Hadeed area of Karachi received the heaviest rain up to 105 millimeter. Landhi area recorded rain up to 45.5 millimeter, while Jinnah terminal recorded the minimum quantity of rain in the city up to 11.4 millimeter.
