A group of Yeminis fishermen, while sailing in the Gulf of Aden, found a dead sperm whale floating in the ocean.
They hooked and dragged it towards the shore. Upon inspection, they discovered ambergris inside it. Ambergris is a rare expensive waxy substance secreted by the sperm whale which is used in perfume to preserve the fragrance. The substance is normally produced in whale’s intestine as a way to protect their bowels from indigestible sharp objects and it is discharged from the body as excretion.
The 35 poor fishermen were over the moon after finding “the treasure” worth 1.5 million US dollars. A fisherman said his one friend called him and told that the mammal was floating in the water and it might have ambergris, so they decided to find it out.
“The stench coming from the fish had made us believe that there must be something inside it and we really found it,” he said.
Another fisherman said the price they received for the substance was unimaginable for them. “We never expected this,” he said.
They equally distributed the money among themselves and gave some to the needy.
