Grand operation against anti-encroachment begins on Karachi’s Gujjar Nullah
KARACHI: The local administration has launched a grand operation against encroachments on drains, stormwater drain and public properties in district Central.
The administration made announcement through speakers of mosques in the district central warning the people residing on encroachments to vacate their houses. The public officials said that the encroachment would be removed phase-wise. In the first phase commercial encroachments would be removed.
The director anti-encroachment said that the operation was launched at three places at once. Two operations from Café Piyala to Teen Hatti and one on New Karachi Nullah.
During the operation, encroachments on three places of Gujjar Nullah, two of Lyari River, three of Orangi Nullah, two of Malir River and two of Mehmoodabad Nullah would be removed. Land up to 30 feet peripheries of stormwater drains would be cleared of encroachment.
Teams of Pakistan Army and Rangers are also participating in the operation to eliminate the encroachments, while teams of police, Sui Gas and K-Electric are also present on the spot.
It may be recalled that after the announcement by DC Central on Sept 1, the residents of the area staged a protest and suspended the traffic between Nazimabad and Liaquatabad, after which the police and Sindh government clarified that the operation would be carried out against commercial encroachments and not residential ones. The protesters were dispersed and traffic was restored.
