Important election for the top offices — chairman and deputy chairman — of the Upper House of the Parliament (Senate) will be held on Friday (today).
Former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gillani has been chosen as joint opposition candidate for the chairman seat while the outgoing chairman Sadiq Sanjrani is the government’s candidate.
Newly elected members of the Upper House have taken oath as Senators at the specially convened session of the house at the Parliament House.
Beside Gillani, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri of JUI-F is the candidate for deputy chairman’s post fielded by Pakistan Democratic Movement (opposition alliance).
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday has nominated Senator Mirza Mohammad Afridi as the government-backed candidate for the seat of deputy chairman.
Furthermore, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz has alleged that opposition senators are being pressurised not to vote for PDM candidates.
In the Senate, as newly-elected senators take oath today, the opposition alliance has slightly more seats than the government coalition but, according to experts, it is difficult to say which party is going to win the election.
