Former rulers used PIA as chingchi rickshaw: Firdous Ashiq Awan
SEHWAN SHARIF: Shedding light on abuse of the national flag carrier, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan on Friday said former rulers used the Pakistan International Airline (PIA) as a chingchi rickshaw.
“Even a chingchi rickshaw would not have been used like the PIA was used by them. The flag carrier’s pilots were used as chauffeurs between 2008 and 2018,” she said.
Firdous Ashiq Awan said Chairman PIA Arshad Mahmood relayed the cabinet about scandalous use of the airline. She said PIA flights were diverted from regular routes for 21 times.
“Unnecessary hiring was made on the basis of nepotism. Consequently, 250 PIA employees are sitting idle in the organisation,” she said.
About 1.6 billion rupees damage had been inflicted on the national exchequer as a result of visits of personal nature, she said. To the contrary, she said, the airline had drawn benefit of Rs46 million in last two months, while aggregate profit has increased by 34 percent.
Referring to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Ashiq Awan said when “the king” had a cardiac arrest, people were told that he paid from his pocket, while, 28 crores rupees were paid from the treasury.
Lashing out at the opposition’s protests on July 25, the first anniversary of 2018 general elections, she said a gang was involved in spreading anarchy in different countries.
The special assistant to PM said an imposing politician like Chaudhry Nisar had restricted himself to his home because of the leading Pakistan Muslim League-N leaders.
