Ex-Ambassador to US Dr Asad Majeed appointed foreign secretary

Dr Asad Majeed Khan, who was Pakistan’s ambassador to the US during the PTI government when former premier Imran Khan blamed Washington for hatching conspiracy to oust his government, has been appointed as the foreign secretary.

The notification of the appointment of Dr. Asad Majeed as Foreign Secretary has been issued by the Establishment Division.

Dr. Asad Majeed is currently serving as the Pakistan’s Ambassador to Belgium. Majeed is a BS-22 officer of the Foreign Service. He is also the ambassador to European Union and Luxembourg.

He came to lime light when former prime minister Imran Khan claimed that US ambassador Donald Lu has sent cypher to the then Pakistan’s Ambassador to US Asad Majeed, containing threat to oust his government.

He served as Pakistan’s ambassador in Washington from January 11, 2019 to March 2022.

Alleged Regime Change Operation:

On March 27, Prime Minister Imran Khan in his address to the public gathering in Islamabad had waved a letter and said that a country [allegedly America] was trying to change the regime with the help of money, further calling it a “Foreign Conspiracy”.

On March 28, the then-opposition leader Shahbaz Sharif moved a no-confidence motion against Imran Khan after which the supporters and opponents of the movement were counted.

On April 03, Deputy Speaker National Assembly Qasim Suri, refused to accept a motion to debate the future of Prime Minister Imran Khan, saying “foreign powers” were interfering in the country’s democratic process.

“This no-confidence motion is against the constitution. I rule out this no-confidence motion in accordance with the constitution,” deputy speaker Asad Qaiser said as the session started.

Later, Supreme Court of Pakistan announced its verdict on suo moto notice case on April 3 ruling of Deputy Speaker National Assembly Qasim Suri.

A five-member bench of the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the April 3 ruling of the Deputy Speaker and dissolution of the National Assembly was unconstitutional, after which the Supreme Court restored the National Assembly.

On April 09, PTI Chief Imran Khan ousted by a no-confidence vote in parliament.
