Ex-accountant of Islamabad court arrested for Rs1.5 bn corruption
ISLAMABAD: Former accountant of Islamabad district court has been arrested for his alleged involvement in embezzlement worth more than Rs1.5 billion during his job.
The anti-corruption cell of the Federal Investigation Agency said Riaz Ahmed would use bail bonds for personal benefit. He is being interrogated by the FIA.
The suspect was appointed at the court as an accountant in 1996 and served there in the capacity until 2018.
The FIA began probe against him on order of Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Athar Minallah.
According to the Transparency International report, which was released in Jan 2021, the corruption in Pakistan had increased in 2020 as compared to 2019.
Pakistan is now ranking at 124 out of 180 corrupt countries, said the global corruption perception list issued by the Transparency International (TI).
The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) is released every year by Berlin-based non-profit organization.
