Vienna: Seven journalists from around the world have been selected for the 2025 World Press Freedom Heroes Award, recognizing their exceptional contributions to press freedom and courageous journalism.

Among the honorees is Palestinian journalist Maryam Abu Daqah, who was martyred earlier this year in Gaza.

According to the International Press Institute (IPI), the award ceremony will take place on October 24 in Vienna, marking the organization’s 75th anniversary.

The award pays tribute to journalists who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to truth, accountability, and freedom of expression, often at great personal risk.

This year’s honorees include Maryam Abu Daqah from Palestine and Victoria Roshchyna from Ukraine — both of whom lost their lives while reporting from conflict zones. Abu Daqah was killed by Israeli forces on August 25, 2025, while performing her journalistic duties in Gaza.

Other recipients include Martin Baron from the United States, Gustavo Gorriti from Peru, Jimmy Lai from Hong Kong, and Tsegaalem Waldeyes from Ethiopia.

IPI stated that the award serves as a reminder of the crucial role journalists play in defending truth and democracy, often under threats, violence, and censorship.
