Elimination of Sexual Violence being observed around the world today
Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict is being observed today around the world.
On 19 June 2015, the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed on 19 June each year the International Day for the ‘Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict’ with a view to raising awareness of the need to end conflict-related sexual violence, to honor the victims and survivors of sexual abuse around the world.
It was also observed to pay tribute to all those who have bravely devoted their lives and sacrificed their lives in standing up to eradicate these crimes.
The date was chosen to mark the adoption of Security Council Resolution 1820 (2008), on 19 June 2008, in which the Council condemned sexual abuse as a war strategy and as an impediment to building peace.
