ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has ordered recounting of votes in NA-249 Karachi by-election.
The ECP gave the judgment responding to the application filed by the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Miftah Ismail.
The commission directed all the parties to reach Returning Officer’s Office on May 6 (Thursday) at 9:00 am for recounting of votes.
On the other hand, Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said the PTI wanted to hold reelection on the NA seat.
The winning candidate of Pakistan Peoples Party Qadir Mandokhail said that the recounting will not give birth to a miracle. No proof of miscounting was submitted by the PML-N to the ECP, he maintained.
On Apr 30, major political parties contesting for the NA-249 seat in by-poll had rejected the unofficial results, according to which Qadir Khan Mandokhail had emerged victorious in Karachi after securing 16,156 votes.
Miftah Ismail was runner-up with 15,473 votes, and candidate of outlawed Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) Mufti Nazeer Ahmed Kamalvi had secured third position with 11,125 votes.
Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) chairman Mustafa Kamal came fourth with 9,227 votes, followed by PTI’s Amjad Afridi with 8,922 votes.
30 candidates were contesting for the National Assembly seat which had fallen vacant after the PTI leader Faisal Vawda resigned from it for his seat in the Senate.
One day prior to the election, the Awami National Party (ANP) had announced to withdraw its candidate in favour of PML-N’s candidate.
276 polling stations comprising 796 polling booths had been established in the constituency. The polling started at 8:00 am and it will continue till 5:00pm without any break.
