Heavy rain lashed across Dubai on Sunday flooding Dubai mall. Store employees reported temporary closure.
Videos and images circulating on social media show people moving through stores on the mall’s ground floor. The rainwater flooded a few of the shops, the Fashion Avenue area of the mall.
Dubai Media Office posted a statement on their official Twitter account where an Emaar spokesperson said “Dubai Mall was affected by the heavy rainfall, causing leakages in limited areas.”
“We are working to contain all leakages and the mall remains operational and open to the public. Mall staff are on the ground, ensuring the visitor experience remains unaffected,” statement also said.
Residents and visitors took to Twitter to express their disbelief.
“Bring your flippers to Dubai Mall if you’re planning on doing any shopping,” one user wrote. “Oh yes, and an umbrella. Bring an umbrella!”
Severe traffic was also reported due to the heavy rains and thunder across Dubai on Monday. The roads between Dubai and Sharjah were most affected, sources say.
Additionally, in a statement, Dubai Airports said that it expected interruption to arrivals and departures throughout the afternoon.
“We urge customers to check Dubai Airports website or their airline’s website,” the statement said. “We are working with our partners to normalize operations and minimize inconvenience.”
