Doctors remove 59 ft tapeworm from Thai man’s stomach

Thailand’s doctors were surprised to remove 59 feet long worm (tape warm) from a patient’s stomach.

According to the foreign news agency, a patient aged 67, came to the hospital by taking a complaint of stomach pain, in the Nong Khai province of Thailand.

The doctors prescribed him a stool test. However, the Parasitic Disease Research Centre report revealed that, it contained 28 eggs, for which the man was given de-worming medicine, niclosamide, before the giant parasite oozed out of his bottom the next day on March 20.

Moreover, the doctors stated that the main cause behind this incident, is the intake of infected and raw beef that contained eggs.

Dr Schawanya Rattanapitoon, who led the team, said: “Transmission is caused by eating raw beef, these parasites can live in humans for more than 30 years.”

“However, currently, they do not survive very long because better medication is available.” She further added.

This 60 feet tape worm is the longest that has been seen in Thailand, in 50 years.
