Asim Abbasi, director of the web series “Churails” aired on Indian entertainment platform Z5 Global, has apologized for using French artist’s artwork.
Twitter user Amna Tariq said in a tweet about a month ago that the sketch featured in “Churails” was a copy of a sketch by French artist Malika Favre for the New York Times’ Opinion, which was copied by the Witchcraft team without credit. The tweet also tagged the French artist.
In response, Malika Favre wrote in response to the use of illustrations without permission and without giving credit: “It’s too bad, thanks for sharing, I will look into the matter.”
Not only that, but Amna Tariq also shared a screenshot of actress Sarwat Gilani’s Instagram stories and wrote, “She also used this sketch as a poster.”
Director Asim Abbasi wrote in his tweet, “A few weeks ago, I came to know about the duplication of a sketch by a French artist.
He explained that the artwork studio was built from scratch and that my silence on the matter was due to the fact that the production house needed time to process. I strongly believe that the rights of all artists should be protected.
Asim Abbasi personally apologized for the matter. This is the second project of director Asim Abbasi after the movie “Cake”.
