Diagnosis of cancer to become possible through blood test
A cancer is mostly diagnosed by examining samples of tissues or cells by an expert, however the scientists of United States have discovered a blood test which could diagnose cancer now. This blood test will detect cancer even before its symptoms are shown in a patient.
Grail company’s flagship Galleri blood test can detect cancer of 50 different types by examining the DNA in blood.
The Grail’s method uses the tiny chemicals in DNA to determine if cancer genes are active. The new technology can diagnose 50 types of cancer in the human body at the same time. United Kingdom’s state-run National Health Service has started recruiting 140,000 people to conduct controlled trials for the test.
“We need to study the Galleri test carefully to find out whether it can significantly reduce the number of cancers diagnosed at a late stage,” said Peter Sasieni, professor of cancer prevention at King’s College London, talking to Reuters.
The blood test is being considered to be a game changer for early cancer detection.
Experts believe that early detection of cancer is important for people who can get rid of the disease with immediate treatment and that this test will help save thousands of lives each year in the UK in the future.
The test will work by screening DNA released into the bloodstream by cells to detect abnormal chemical changes and identify tumors.
According to the Daily Mail, around 360,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in the UK each year, which is equivalent to 1,000 cases a day.
The World Cancer day is observed on 4th February to spread awareness and to reduce the global impact of cancer. The aim of celebrating World Cancer Day is to bring an end to the misconception about cancer and to provide the accurate information to lower down the disease.
Moreover, cancer is one of the deadliest diseases. Some of the types from which people are effected are lung, breast, cervical, head and neck and colorectal cancer (CRC).
