 Court grants two-day physical remand of PTI’s Azam Swati

The Islamabad’s special court on Thursday granted two-day physical remand of PTI senior leader and Senator Azam Swati after he was booked by FIA’s Cybercrime Wing (CCW) late last night, for his alleged controversial tweets against head of state’s institution.

Former Federal Prime Minister Azam Khan Swati was arrested from his residence in Islamabad by FIA Cybercrime wing late last night over his alleged controversial tweets.

Senator Azam Swati was produced in the court of Senior Civil Judge Shabbir Bhatti of Islamabad District Sessions Court.

On behalf of Azam Swati, Babar Awan, Sardar Ghazal Khan and Faisar Jadoon appeared in the court.

The lawyers of the former federal minister took the position in the court that Azam Swati was arrested only on political grounds, adding that, Azam Swati was tortured by the intelligence agencies.

FIA requested Azam Swati’s 7-day physical remand.

After hearing the arguments of the parties, the court reserved its decision regarding the request for –day physical remand of the former federal minister, while the court also immediately ordered Azam Swati to undergo medical treatment at PIMS Hospital.

After the court’s order, FIA officials took Senator Azam Swati to PIMS Hospital for medical examination.

Later, the court granted 2-day physical remand of PTI leader Azam Swati.

The case:

A case has been registered against the former federal minister under Section 20, 131, 500, 505 of PECA and Section 216, 109 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

According to the text of the FIR, Azam Swati made highly derogatory tweets to serve malicious and ulterior motives, added that, “Azam Swati directly targeted the State of Pakistan, state institutions and the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa.”

“Azam Swati targeted the country’s courts and he tried to incite people against the state institutions by spreading wrong information, Azam Swati’s tweet created an atmosphere of fear and terror among the people,” FIR reads.

PTI senior leader Azam Swati, soon after his arrest was presented before senior civil judge Shabbir Bhatti’s court in Islamabad where he talked to journalists and alleged that, he was picked up and tortured by intelligence agencies for tweeting about Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa.
