“Courage to say No”, Mahira Khan’s recent campaign Mashaadi shed light on domestic violence
Every year, the social media platform ‘Mashion’ owned by Mahira Khan produces a campaign named Mashaadi. The initial concept behind Mashaadi is to create fun content and guidelines about marriage but later it focused on the problems related to the wedding through different themed campaigns.
This year, the campaign revolved around a very sensitive topic which is “domestic violence”. According to Pakistan Democratic and health survey, more than 1 in 4 ever-married women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15. This campaign highlighted the courage of saying no to an abusive relationship either physical or emotional in a most heart-touching way.
The story of the campaign revolves around a girl named Maheen played by Mahira Khan, getting ready for her wedding. In the meantime, she is getting painful flashbacks of how she has been treated throughout her relationship by her soon-to-be husband. Her mother comforts her by saying “relationships mein aisa hota rehta hai” which stressed the mindset of our society that women should adjust no matter what.
Then comes Behroze Sabzwari, her supportive father who promises to support her no matter what choice she will make. This kind of encouragement and support coming from the bride’s father just melts the hearts of daughters. Maheen decided to walk away from the physically and emotionally abusive relationship without thinking about “What will people say?”
Our society often makes this kind of abuse normal in relationships by saying boys will change, a woman should give more time or don’t make any decisions so quickly. But this story gives a very strong message to all the women to celebrate their own choice of saying no to any kind of abuse with courage and not being ashamed of thinking good for them.
