Coronavirus in Pakistan: death toll soars to 143, infection cases to 7,481

ISLAMABAD: The total number of coronavirus infection cases in the country has climbed to 7,481 and death toll to 143 on Saturday morning.

The infection cases include 3,391 in Punjab, 2,217 in Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 1,077, Balochistan 335, Islamabad Capital Territory 163, Gilgit-Baltistan 250, and Azad Kashmir 48 cases.

So far 1,832 patients of Coronavirus have been recovered, while breakup of 143 deaths is as follows: Sindh 47, Punjab 37, KP 50, ICT 01, Balochistan 05 and GB 03. 41 others are in a critical condition.

According to National Command and Operation Center, 92,584 tests have been conducted since outbreak of the pandemic. Local transmission is 62 percent and foreign travel 38 percent. The government has made ready 589 hospitals with Covid facilities with 1881 patients admitted across the country, while 540 quarantine facilities have been established with 19,409 people housed in them.

Addressing a news conference in Islamabad on Apr 17, Special Assistant on Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan had assured to provide personal protection equipment to the media workers from next week.

She had said the kits would be provided to the journalists visiting isolation centers and Quarantine centers.  She had said the media workers were playing the most effective and vanguard role against coronavirus and it was the government’s responsibility to provide them the protection. She had assured to protect the rights of media workers.

“Nine journalists have so far been infected with the Covid-19 and they should use the app launch for them so that their difficulties could be addressed,” she had said.

The special assistant had said the media should cooperate with the government in containing the spread of the pandemic. She had said the media should create awareness amongst the people about the precautionary measures that needs to be adopted to prevent the spread of the virus.
