COAS Gen Asim Munir, CJCSC Gen Sahir Shamshad conferred with Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military)
President Dr Arif Alvi on Thursday conferred Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military) upon Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) Sahir Shamshad Mirza in recognition of their valuable services to the Pakistan Army.
In a special investiture ceremony held at the Aiwan-e-Sadar, President Arif Alvi conferred Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military) upon the top army brass.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Senate Chairman Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani, Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, federal cabinet members, members of parliament and senior civil and military officers participated in the ceremony.
Who is CJCSC Gen Sahir Shamshad?
CJCSC Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza was commissioned in the Infantry Battalion in 1987 and graduated from Command and Staff College Quetta and National Defence University Islamabad.
He did MSc (Global Security) course from Cranfield University, UK. During his distinguished military career he served in various command, staff and instructional assignments.
He came to prominence as the director of general military operations during the last two years of former COAS Gen (retd) Raheel Sharif’s tenure.
In that role, he was part of Gen (retd) Sharif’s core team at the General Headquarters, which led the military operation against the banned TTP and other militants in North Waziristan.
Moreover, Gen Mirza was closely involved in the Quadrilateral Coordination Group that brokered intra-Afghan talks involving Pakistan, China, Afghanistan and the United States.
He was also a member of the Sartaj Aziz-led committee on reforms for Gilgit-Baltistan.
Who is COAS Gen Syed Asim Munir?
Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir was commissioned in 23rd Frontier Force Regiment in April 1986 and awarded the Sword of Honor of the 17th Officers Training Course (OTC).
He is a graduate of Military School Japan, Command and Staff College Quetta, Malaysian Armed Forces Command and Staff College Kuala Lumpur and National Defence University Islamabad. He also holds an MPhil degree in Public Policy and Strategic Security Management.
During his military career, he served in various command, staff and instructional assignments, among his key staff appointments as Brigadier Major Infantry Brigade, General Staff Officer Grade-II in Chief of General Staff Secretariat, Directing Staff in Command and Staff College Quetta and Chief of Staff of Strike Corps are included.
He also led the Pakistani training contingent in Saudi Arabia.
COAS Gen Munir also has the honor of heading as the Director General (DG) of Pakistan’s two top intelligence agencies, Military Intelligence (MI) and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). He was also the Quartermaster General at the General Head Quarters (GHQ).
Last month, Gen Munir assumed command as the new COAS after Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa hung up his boots, while Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza replaced Gen (retd) Nadeem Raza.
